The
halimeter is a device that can
actually measure the extent of your halitosis problem.
It measures the level of Volatile Sulphur Compounds in your breath sample.
However, when judging breath odor with your nose, high
sulfide levels account for only 20 to 40% of odors.
One
possible reason for this is that sulfides are not the only
gaseous components involved in malodor.
This is why the organoleptic test
(smelling your breath with the nose), should also be
utilized to quantify the
bad breath gases so that one can determine if
the treatment is reducing the odors over time.
Halimeters are a help to diagnosis but cannot take the
place of the actual smelling of the breath in
diagnosis and treatment.
